Hi folks,

A client is reporting that all of the text in a Flash 8 swf is invisible on their PC.

But it's not dynamic text? (I've check that they have installed the latest Flash Player)

I saw it with my own eyes, but don't have the same problem at my end.... how is this possible!?

Cheers,

James

I had the same problem!! to me the only solution was to publish it in a flash 7 player..
only problem with this is that you loose the nice filters of flash8...

try embedding the font in Flash before you publish, also try different text encoding types, otherwise, if the text doesnt need to be changed at runtime or doesnt need to be updatable, then you can just turn it into paths, or to save memory, create bitmaps in Photoshop or at runtime in Flash 8, then you dont have to worry about fonts.

Hi all,

I have this same problem that James described - text that is invisible only on one of my computers and only with IE (I am using Internet Explorer 7).  I have found that if I go to the "Page" menu in IE and zoom out to 50%, then suddenly the text is visible!  The text I am having issues with is *only* text that is being added to a textArea component (in AS using the code myTextArea.text += "my text. \n"Wink.  All other text in my app is visible on all browsers, computers, etc., so far...

Does anyone know what property of the displayed text is being affected by zooming out on my page and what I can do eliminate this invisible text bug?

Thank you!

Hi all,

So I ended up answering my own question in my favorite fashion - good ol' guess and check.  (I'm a scientist by the way, and when it comes down to it, science pretty much is an edumacated form of guess and check, so that method is a favorite of mine).

So, my issue anyway was related to the DPI setting in the control panel for my computer.  I don't know if this fix will work for others who have had this problem or just me since I don't really know if the cause is unique, but...

What I did: Go to Start Menu -> Control Panel for Windows and select the "Display" option (or if using the new stylized control panel select the "Appearance and Settings" option then the "Display" option at the bottom).  At the top of the Display dialogue box, select the "Settings" tab and then click on the "Advanced" button.  There, you will see a drop down menu allowing you to select your DPI setting - set it to 96 DPI (the "problem setting" for me was 120 DPI, which we had set to make text on our screen appear larger).  Click "OK" on the ensuing dialogue boxes - well, nothing bad happened to me anyway... it just asks about fonts or something.

Then, if like me you still want your text for folder names, etc. to appear larger (ie. legible), within the same Display dialogue box, click on the "Appearance" tab and set the font size dropdown menu to either "Large" or "Extra Large" and you should be good to go!

In terms of explaining that to customers.... well, I suppose that explaination will be going in my FAQs page, even though it's very cumbersome.  If anyone finds/knows a better way to deal with this DPI issue more seamlessly within the Flash app instead of making users adjust their control panel settings, I would be very excited to hear it.

Until then, I hope this is helpful.
