I downloaded the files for this tutorial and noticed in the fla  in the second frame, the text field has an instance name of sttus. No where in the flash action script is this text field mentioned and no where in the php file is the instance name mentioned. However, status.text is mentioned in the fla and that field gets populated with either "Submited data was saved" or Error in saving "submitted data". I changed the instance name of status.text to test.text and it still gets populated. I took the instance name completely off and it still gets populated. How does this work??

this tutorial is here http://www.flash-db.com/Tutorials/saving/

I have fixed the typo. There's no magic, the textfield have a default message on it, if you delete the message, the textfield will be empty. You can download again the files that I have updated
