I changed the load commands to the guestbook so that you will no longer have to change anything when you want to load it into a level or movieclip or even movieclip's in movie clips etc....

If you have any problems please post them and I will look into and see what I can do.

Aditional link to download this file

Thanks Burton for this fix . Jorge

Also those who load into another movie, take in account that the path to the files change to the one of the main movie. That means, if guestbook is inside GuestBook folder, when loaded into a movie outside this folder, the path will be the one of the main folder, so the loadVariables will lost the path. In this case, check this: http://www.flash-db.com/Board/index.php?topic=14514.0    Jorge

I made this fla so that I would not have to answer too many questions like this.  If you download the file then you should have no problems.

If you wan to see what is wrong with the buttons....all of yur load commandshave to be changed to refernece to the new locations.  Flash referencing is all relative to the maintimeline.  Now when Jeff made this guestbook he did use the relative referencing to avoid loading problem.  If you use _self, _this ,_parent....you can avoid these problems.  That is what I did with this fla.  Dowload it to see what I changed or jusat use that one instead.

Check out the article on referrencing...

What am I doing wrong then?  I've downloaded your fla and changed the action script on the first frame to where my files can be found.  Then I uploaded this very same file with only that one change on it and it sees my .txt file fine but then no submition or looking at the next ten or the previous ten... it just hangs there.

I've tried it loaded into a blank mc as well as a particular level and still I have the same problems.  I guess I'm just stupid.

Okay, I've got it, I've got my blank mc that the guestbook is loading into, stuck deep inside my site and into a whole different level.  I'm going to try and figure this thing out but if someone has the answer already, mabye the'd be nice enought to leave it here.

thanks

Sorry for my denseness.

Okay, here's an update.

I just got it working.  Man, what a pain.
My site is so large I had to open up a second account.  This second account was opened with a different vendor in order to obtain a site which had mysql and php capabilities.  I was loading up the file with the movie clip from one site and the guestbook from another site.  That's what wasn't working.  You have to have both the file you're loading and the gustbook inside the same server.

Woops, I thought I had it.

I've done test after test on this thing and here is what I've come up with.  Bare with me, as I'm not as good of a flasher as most of you.  If this seems obvious to you then I'm sorry.

I've loaded this fla up and ran several tests on it.  The first was to load up an SWF that then loaded the guestbook.swf.  This works like a charm.  In fact, any site that loads it up as the next file is just dandy.

Here is my problem, I'll explaine my site and give the link as a reference.

page 1 - loads up "loadism.swf"  that checks to make sure the user has the latest version of flash.  It then loads up 2 more pages.
Page 2 - level 55 "nav.swf" is a navigation for the entire site.
page 3 - level 1 "home.swf" is the content window for the entire site.

From the "nav.swf" page you can load up several other pages which will take the place of the "home.swf" on level 1.

Choose Backlot and level 1 is preplaced by "mainmenu.swf".  Next is the Watertower button, which replaces "mainmenu.swf" on level 1 with "watertower.swf".

Inside "watertower.swf" there is a blank mc called GuestBook.  When the guestbook button is pushed it loads it up and everything is still hunky dory.  It sees the text in the .txt file and it's perfect.

But, when you try and submit an entry it hangs.  I understand that it has to do with paths and I also know that it's the actionscript on the submit button.  Now, everytime I've posted here I keep being told that it works, that I'm not doing it right.  I'm here to tell you that I've changed nothing on the fla but where to find the .txt file and it still is not working.  I've ran test after test trying to isolate the problem but to no avail.  I've been able to make the guestbook work but only if I load up the "watertower.swf" file from an html and then press the guestbook button.  You see, it's only one link back in the chain till the guestbook comes up and it works fine.  I've got several .swf files that keep loading other .swf files then finaly I get to the guestbook.

I hope this makes sense.  here is the link to the site that I'm speaking of.

Moving on into my 3rd day of not being able to make this thing work.  I'm not one to give up but this is getting rediculous.  I've spent well over 20 hours in front of my computer on this thing and haven't gained an inch.

I've checked it and double checked it.  It works when it's in it's own html but nothing else.  I know the codeing is right but now I'm starting to question if I'm doing anything else correctly.

For all you non believers out there, I'll give you some test sites I just put together.

The first one, to show you that it works, here's the swf working inside it's own html
http://www.xmission.com/~fletch/guestbook/GuestBook.html

And the second is a simple page with a blank mc called GuestBook and a single button that loads the guesbook into that mc.
http://www.xmission.com/~fletch/test.html

I have not changed anything on the GuestBook.fla other than indicating where my .txt file can be found.[[

here are the .fla files that correspond to the two links above.  Please, someone download them and tell me what I'm doing wrong.  I have no pride, as you can see from the number of posts proclaiming my ignorance.  I just want this pain to end.

thanks
