Well. I'm think the best is to host the files here, in Flash-Db (Jeff?).  Also we can put togheter the tutorials about this and you guys can answer questions about it in the Forum.

Great posts here.

Justin - Thanks in advance for all the work you've done.  I can't wait to get started.
Jorge - Is the new amfdata class from Justin up somewhere?

I moved my questions about AMF vs. XML to the AMF board.
http://www.flash-db.com/Board/index.php?board=24 board.

Thanks  - Ron Chambers

one note tho... you have reverse engineered the AMF format by looking at how remoting works from macromedia's remotinbg tools. Also u require using objects that come with flash remoting, even if its the demo....

legally you are using the as code of flash remoting which u havent bought, u tried from the trial version and cannot use beyond the 30 days trial period & ure solution has come from reverse engg a macromedia flash program which is illegal in the united states.

so u cant distribute or use this on commercial products since its illegal

just a word of caution

Hi Scott,

this is just a personal opinion - I do not live in the US, some parts of US law that tend to be visible to other countries are a mystery to me, and even english is not my native language.
So if iI decide to learn english by  first listening to people speaking that language, then trying to talk myself , and experiment until there is successful conversation, is that illegal?
If I observe how a flash player talks to a macromedia server, and then try to imitate the server until flash player understands me, is that illegal?
The only real difference between the two - even with the assistance of conventional teachers, learning english took magnitudes longer than learning amf.

May I state that
a) I only use functionality provided by the flash player - using those other actionscripts you mention is seen by some as a convenience and by others as unnecessary
b) I do not own flash because macromedia does not make flash for my computer. Running the 30day trial of flash in an emulation environment has failed for me; a trial version of  an MM server product suitable for my system also has failed, and I will certainly not look into any more  trials until there is one which promises success.  In plain words: no trial version of anything was used.
c) the actual data source I observed was macromedia's  pet market sample application

BTW: the simple tool I used to lwhat you call "reverse engineering" is known to macromedia (but they dont seem to use something similar). May I quote a macromedia person here

What I was referring to, was that this is a bug that has persisted through version upgrades of both IE and Flash over the course of 2 years. I have seen it mentioned (and have mentioned) it many times in the past, as well as submitting it to the macromedia bug list - so it is hardly an unknown issue.
no problem. actually i have heard of this issue before, but have trouble reproducing it. this thread is actually really useful because it has some good debugging info.

From what i know macromedia has not published the AMF format, reverse engg the format by using the remoting app or looking/studying the flash player is still analyzing a protocol that is not open to the public to break/use except via macromedia applications.

i'd thinkg twice if i was a u.s. devloper using this to make anything that is not free.....  even freemay be an issue if macromdiea feels this will affect sales of the remoting/commsever product lines.

Hi Scott,

This is just a personal opinion - I do not live in the US, some parts of US law that tend to be visible to other countries are a mystery to me also, and even english is not my native language. Also some ways of thinking tend to be difficult to me to understand, perhaps because english is not my native language. My feel is a mix of admiration (het, these guys do incredible things!! They're inteligent, curious, free and know alot) and incredulity (hey, these guys want to forbid people to be inteligent, curious and free, cause they could loss money)
But some kinds of things are inevitable, since the world is not an enterprise, and since there are people and countries that couldn't buy and sell what they need.
But don't worry about your money. Free people never are good clients, they tend to do his own tools, search his own answers and worst of all, they don't read carefully the law. So, they never would be your clients. Just forget this kind of people and come back to your business, there's a big world waiting your products, and for sure your revenues could be bigger and bigger.
Sorry about my english, as I have say, is not my native lenguage, and as some people, tend to be a mistery to me.

I am doing something similiar with plain old wddx and PHP.
http://www.irq11.com/~louie/wddx/peopleServer.html

I downloaded the components from here
http://www.macromedia.com/software/flashremoting/downloads/components/
it says nothing about these being only a trial, so I think I can safely use them in commercial products. I am not using the AMF format, but since it has been brought up, do you think using these free components is a problem?

Roberto,

How much luck have you had with porting the PHP code over to java. I am really intrested in being able to use this inside of a java environment to avoid needing to add anohter language to my project. I have little flash experience but do know java and I am willing to help out with any of the coding that needs to be done if it is possible. Let me know.

We are starting a project to port the phpamf project to Java...

I noticed you were thinking of doing the same.  Are you still persuing this project?

I would love to combine efforts.

Thx @ all for the amazing effort on AMFphp - I am checking it out ATM and I am totally enthuiastic.

I have one more question to you guys.
Suppose I integrate AMFphp in a commercial Project - as the GPL says, all efforts done with sources that are under GPL should be also opensourced - which would mean I could never intergrate AMFphp in a project for clients that wouldnt agree (noone will) - what about that?

Cheers
Manuel

what they mean is that they dont want u making changes or extensions to the base source and then not releasing it for free.  u can use it for private projects, but u cant make changes to the core files without releasing ur changes.  i suggest that u dont use amf on any professional projects until the program is fully released.  it is still in its early stages.
and please post AMF/Flash Comm related posts in the forum designated for that purpose.
thanks
