I am wondering if it is possible to access the windows explorer in the swf itself to attach an image or soundclip to a movieclip. I know with the FileReference class, one can upload images to a server from a file in windows explorer.

The FileReference is the right point to go for.
If you run under Air, you can use FileSystem.
Otherwise you need some tool localy on your machine.
