11/2/2003 - Welcome to the new Flash Remoting Library
The Flash-db remoting library is the newest addition to Flash-db. It has been in the works for a while and was finally released today. Over the next couple of weeks/months we will be adding lots of additional service code as well as flash remoting tutorials and news. If you (or anyone you know) would like to add a service to this collection - please let us know >>.

9/26/2003 - New AS2 Version of the remoting Components for Flash MX 2004
Justin Watkins of AMFPHP released a nice version of the Flash MX remoting components today. These still need some testing, but they are looking really good so far. You can download them: here (http://www.amfphp.org/components/). >>

9/25/2003 - SOAP vs. Flash Remoting Benchmark An interesting article released by FlashORB, the makers of a flash remoting server app. You can read more here. >> Discuss this on the flash-db message boards here. >>

9/17/2003 - Flash Remoting Components for Flash MX 2004 (released today): Macromedia released the updated remoting components for Flash MX 2004 today. If you are using MX 2004, be sure to download the new components. If you are using Flash MX and have not yet downloaded the components, be sure to do so. The NetConnection debugger makes things really easy. Download them here >>

Flash remoting started out as a Macromedia product that enables fast, easy, and reliable method of data transfer between a flash client and server side logic. Flash remoting uses an open format called AMF (ActionScript Message Format) for transferring data in between the flash client and the server. Because this format is open and straight forward to implement new products by other vendors started to evolve for flash remoting after macromedia first released remoting. The first of these, and the basis for most others, was developed by Musicman (Wolfgang Hamann). Shortly after this it became possible to use flash remoting in almost any programming language, free of cost. The most famous and widely used of these is AMFPHP. However, lots of others do exist.

The AMF format is a binary format that is similar in structure to a shared object. It was actually this similarity that allowed for the first alternative flash remoting products to be created. You can find some additional details here. If your interested in the details of the amf format it can also be useful to read over the php files contained in the io directory within AMFPHP.

The Flash remoting library contains sample code, tutorials, and everything else you need to get started with Flash remoting. The code examples use various server side implementations, including PHP, CF, .Net, Perl and Java. PHP using AMFPHP is used most often.
